Hands down, Layer Cake Shiraz from South Australia was the crowd pleaser!

The dark exotic creamy layers of chocolate notes made the wine stand out from the rest. The University of Chicago Grad students from OMSA and LGBTQ couldn’t get enough of this bottle. Cheers to my new wine newbie’s… Kenneth, Madsion, Jimmy, Kasey, Sasha, Rebecca, Fiyinfolu, Sham, Hussein, Emily, Thandiwe, and Marta.

Let’s do this again!

Luis-Miguel

Yet another celebrity that makes wine has emerged.  Last night at my best friend’s place, I was introduced to a great Chilean wine called Único Luis Miguel, but I never made the connection with the famous Latin Pop singer that has a Grammy under his belt – Luis Miguel.   I confess, I’m not a fan of his, but as of last night, I’ve become a fan of his wine.  I give him credit for selecting a well-known region in Chile.  Maipo Valley produces some outstanding high quality Cabernet Sauvignons and it shows in this particular bottle of Único Gran Reserva.  I highly recommend this solid wine for the price.

Wine NotesUnico-Luis-Miguel-Wine

1. Category:  Earthy, Peppery

2. Wine Type:  Cabernet Sauvignon

3. Country: Chile – Maipo Valley

4. Price: $13.00

5. Notes: Deep cherry red color with strong notes of black currant, black pepper, and a hint of earthy tobacco.  After enjoying the wine for an hour, hints of cocoa appeared.

Four-VinesGetting ready for World Cup 2010?  I’m starting off with a unique Zinfandel from California – Paso Robles to watch the game today – U.S.A vs. England. This old vine Zin is bursting with flavor.  I recommend this for an everyday wine that is easy on the pocket.  I’m going to enjoy the game with this wine…..GO U.S.A!

Casa de la Ermita - Tempranillo

1. Category: Toasty
2. Wine Type:  Tempranillo
3. Country: Spain – Jumilla
4. Price: $15
5. Notes:  On a cold day in the Midwest, this particular bottle of Tempranillo is just comforting.  It has plenty of dark rip fruit flavors along with some hints of vanilla, but the comforting part comes with the nice touch of nutmeg and clove somewhere in between.  This 2004 vintage 2004 Crianza can keep me warm anytime!

2. Wine Type: Blend (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and Zinfandel)
3. Country: USA – Cal

5. Notes: I’ve recently been seduced by a promiscuous blend of grapes… basking in the playfulness of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and Zinfandel, I’m all in for the tasty ride with a touch of coffee and oak lingering in your mouth. Promiscuity never tasted so good! Enjoy and as the wine maker states on the bottle, “practice safe sipping”.

August 17, 2009 Weekly Wine Pick – Yard Dog

  1. Category:  Juicy
  2. Wine Type:  55% Petit Verdot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot
  3. Country:  Australian
  4. Price: $13
  5. Notes:  The Yard dog is out and it’s making noise.  This $13 screw cap bottle has an intense bouquet of blackberry and plums.  At the first inhale, the berries and spice came through quickly, but this blend of Petit Verdot (55%), Cabernet Sauvignon (30%), and Merlot (15%) had so much more to offer after sitting for about 20 minutes.  To the palate it was soft and juicy with absolutely no tannins present and after breathing for a bit, the hearty Merlot flavors and musky plum followed.
